The goal of the Thailand industry is to develop a production system that uses accessible resources (such as feed and energy) and limits production. Invertebrates (insects such as black soldier fly, grasshopper mealworm, housefly larvae, and cricket) are used naturally as monogastric and aquatic species, yet large-scale production of insects for feed. Insects can be mass-produced and participate in a circular economy that minimizes or eliminates food and feed waste (and possibly fertilizer) bioconversion. While the model of formula-scale production of insects has been explored for decades as feed for domestic animals, significant production and transformation of conventional protein resources remain to be achieved. This examination will focus on the nutritional composition of various insects and potential uses of alternative protein sources in animal diets, and their effect on digestibility.
